5 shows to watch when you don’t want to think

If you’re like me, university work has probably already started to make you feel a little burnt out mentally. After summer, all the readings and assignments might make you want to zone out and not have to think when you’re not working. Here are 5 shows that can help with that.

Planet Earth

BBC

This miniseries explores and showcases many parts of the natural world, from scorching red deserts to the endless blue ocean. Filmed over the course of four years, Planet Earth features amazing camera work, allowing us to see nature on an epic scale. The expansive shots, as well as the unmistakable voice of David Attenborough, make this a great show to turn our brain offs to while we take in the wonders of the world.

Lucifer

Netflix

The devil himself arrives on earth and decides to assist a detective, whom he becomes infatuated with. A very popular series, Lucifer recently released its sixth and final season (which I have yet to watch myself). While the show does have some heavy themes, the plot of each episode is quite easy to follow, especially in the earlier seasons. Lucifer has an issue during a case, misunderstands what his therapist tells him, annoys the detective, but eventually solves the case and his issues. While it is a bit formulaic, the charm of the characters, as well as interesting arcs each season, still make this one of the most engaging and fun shows on television right now.

Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party

ViacomCBS

This show is weird, but in a good way. And it is more than a cooking show. The show itself is hosted by two people who are seemingly complete opposites: hip hop legend Snoop Dogg and lifestyle legend Martha Stewart. There’s a live audience, a fake DJ, guests every week such as Ice Cube and Seth Rogen, and copious amounts of alcohol are involved. Parts of the show get awkward at times, especially in the earlier episodes when it’s obvious that the hosts are reading off cue cards. To me, that adds to the show; it’s almost like they know that its a little surreal. Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Party is overall just a fun experience.

SpongeBob SquarePants

Nickelodeon

Is there really much to say about one of the greatest and most popular children’s animated series of all time? Even as an adult, this show about a sea sponge and his friends is still funny. On a personal note, I think that everything after season 3 goes downhill. SpongeBob is always annoying, Patrick is always dumb, Squidward is always grumpy, and so on, but maybe this is just me being a snob about a children’s cartoon. Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob, compared the show to “comfort food” in an interview with CinemaBlend. This is a great comparison, as each 11-minute episode makes you smile and might even remind you of your childhood.

Bob’s Burgers

Fox Broadcasting Company

In this animated comedy Bob Belcher, his wife Linda, and their three kids Tina, Gene and Louise run a burger restaurant. Having recently started its 12th season, Bob’s Burgers does not do season arcs, instead having contained stories every episode. Following the adventures, or misadventures, of the main characters, Bob’s Burgers is full of dumb humor, including but not limited to fart jokes, sex jokes and pee jokes.
