Traveling – 4 Ways To Make It Cheaper

Everybody and their grandmothers keep talking about rising prices everywhere – the grocery store, electricity and gas, petrol, and so on. Sure, all these things also affect the lives of students, but there is a far bigger issue hitting all internationals as a big wave.

Travelling expenses.

All internationals who wish to visit their home countries for breaks have to face a new reality. The prices that a year ago seemed crazy are now the regular-to-cheap ratio tickets. However, let’s be honest, students are used to living a cheap lifestyle – and who doesn’t love a good bargain?

I am going to give you four useful tips to make your travels cheaper (or in other words, the price it should actually cost). I hope these tips will inspire you to get that suitcase out and head towards new experiences!

  1. Use websites such as Momondo and Skyscanner to see different flight options from several companies and compare for the best result. However, these websites do not always show some of the low-cost airlines like EasyJet and Ryanair. Also, make sure your browser is set on private mode, otherwise all the surfing you have done will be for nothing, as the cookies can track your searches and the prices will be raised automatically on these websites. So, if you don’t go incognito in your searches, you will find that the prices that were cheap before – well, they have definitely risen!
  1. Compare prices on Google search! This seems like a no-brainer, but Google has the function of comparing airlines and showing what the prices are depending on which websites you buy the tickets from. Linking back to my previous tip, Google shows Momondo and Skyscanner, but also so many other pages.
  1. Instead of looking at tickets that are direct or with a layover, try breaking the trip up into different parts. For example, if you were to fly to Lithuania, look at the cost of flying to (for example) Dublin first, and then to Vilnius. This can come much cheaper, you might have time to explore the city, and your wallet will be very happy! If you don’t wish to see the city, the misconception that when buying two separate flights you must leave the airport between does not actually apply everywhere. In some cases, you can just stay in the airport area and wait for your next flight! Check the specific airport’s rules and regulations for that.
  1. Last but not least – if prices seem high regardless of all the following tips, check over which day you are travelling! There is not a set day where all tickets are cheaper, but it highly depends on where you are travelling, and with what company. Sometimes, it might be smarter to travel a day before you were originally planning on, or even a day later.

Whether you are planning on going home for Christmas or travelling anywhere else during the year, you deserve to know the cheaper options! Why pay more if you can pay less?

However, always keep in mind that sometimes the cheaper airlines might fly to an airport that is a little bit more outside the city, so keep an eye on that. Also, cheap airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair only include one personal item (such as a backpack) to have with you on board, so if you are planning on bringing a suitcase, you will need to pay extra for this. But hey – less is more, right?

Here’s to smart (and cheap) travelling, exciting experiences, and many happy emotions for all fellow student-travellers!
