Have you been wondering where to take your date (and not be broke afterwards)? We made a list of the best dating spots in Groningen. Whether your date takes place at the beginning of the month and you’re still a big spender, or you’re completely broke at the end of the month, Groningen got it all!

First 10 days of the month

Mr Mofongo

This bar has the best cocktails in the Netherlands (for real!), a robot arm which makes your drinks (no jokes!) and many options for dinner, including a tapas for two. Con: luxury is not for free, so plan this date right after you got your salary.

Concerthuis

This place has many delicious meals (including vegetarian, vegan and glutenfree), amazing coffee, many special beers and at least five different gin tonic variations. Also nice: every Sunday they offer  brakke brunch (hangover brunch). So in case you had a pretty successful date last night and want to continue the next day: give it a try at Concerthuis. Does your date turn out to be freaking awkward? No worries, you can play boardgames here, so you don’t really need to have a conversation.

Kult

Different music each night, walls filled with art, games and bingo: Kult is fun. A cozy, retro, colourful café where cheap cheesefondue, quiche of the week and cute snacks are served at the bar. In case you want a game-kinda date, but you don’t have the money for Concerthuis, Kult also has many fun games on the menu! Bad idea if you have the tendency to throw the playboard over when you lose, but great for preventing awkward silences.

DOT

Ever seen the massive white bowl near the Student Hotel? This is world’s biggest bauble around Christmas, but they also regularly show famous movies, projected on the entire inside of the bauble (DOT Dome). Biggest pro: it’s freaking cheap and awesome compared to a normal cinema! Get some drinks and snacks in the very cosy, but quite expensive bar downstairs after you enjoyed your movie. Next to DOT there’s the one and only city beach where you can enjoy your beer and the sun in the summer.

Rent a canoe @ ‘t Peddeltje

If you’re not the sporty type, they also have motorboats, but it can be really romantic to work your ass off in a canoe together. Explore the canals of Groningen from the water or visit some more secluded areas. A picnic on board will make your date complete!

Price: 15 euro for a two-person canoe, 27,50 for a two-person boat.

Rent a boat @ Friescheveen

This is a hidden, but breathtaking natural park. The most beautiful nature is only accessible by boat, so rent one at café Friescheveen! The silence, the birds and the wonderful green surrounding… romance guaranteed!

After 10 days

Groninger Forum

This is the perfect date for watching artsy arthouse movies together in a romantic, but cheap way. The bar serves fine drinks, but they don’t have many snacks available. At the end of this year the Groninger Forum will move to the Grote Markt. The massive building will including an exhibition room, roof terrace and a lot of cinema rooms. Needless to say, the roof terrace will give you and your date a great view of the city.

Kattencafe

If your date likes cats, this will make him/her the happiest person on earth. Having a coffee and cake with a cat chilling on your lap or licking your toes, what more do you need?

Black & Bloom

Perfect for coffee lovers: people say B&B has the best coffee in town.This café in the centre of Groningen serves many types of coffee and, for the non-cafeineaddicts, a lot of different chocolatemilk flavours.

End of the month

Hortus Haren

Nothing better than strolling through some wonderful gardens while having a deep conversation. For 2 euro pp you get access to 10 gardens with different themes: a Celtic garden, a Chinese garden, a watergarden and lots more.They also serve lunch here and show exhibitions. Con: you need to take a bus of 20 minutes from station Groningen.

Stadspark picknick

The Stadspark is a little bike ride further from the citycentre than Noorderplantsoen, but a lot more private. Laying in the grass, looking at the clouds and watching the sunset together while drinking a bottle of wine: picknicks are very underrated.

Climbing the Martinitower

Please tell your date not to wear heels, because this tower has a lot of steps, but the view is so worth it. For 2 euro pp you can get a ticket at the VVV and if you’re lucky it’s just the two of you up there. You won’t find a better view anywhere near.

Groninger Museum

There’s always a nice exhibition at the Groninger Museum. The tickets are free for students and it can easily take one or two hours to finish the exhibition. Want to culturally or intellectually impress your date? Read a little about the exhibition beforehand.

Prinsentuin

Right in the city centre, close to the Martinitower, you can find the Prinsentuin. If you’re there at the right moment it is full of roses. More romantic is almost impossible! Pro-tip: bring a bottle of wine.

Little gardens (hofjes) in the city

While you’re taking a walk, why not visit the hofjes throughout the city? They almost seem like secret, hidden places and you may need to search for it a bit. A little help from Google will take you where you need to be and this is a free day of discoveries.
